As long as Apple needs people to build Apps for their touch screen devices, you will have a machine that can do design and coding. They will be the workhorses that support the consumer product line of handhelds like the ipod, iphone and ipad. Don't worry, the Mac is not going away. It might get a whole lot cooler with added features, but it's going to be capable of running Xcode for a long long time.
Oh, you will always be able to run Xcode on a Mac. You'll just have to buy the developer subscription for a few thousand dollars per year in order to get it activated...
Well, let's wait and see. In worst case, there are still a few hundred Linux and BSD distributions out there that can be installed on our Macs.

Great ad. When they can't compete on specs Apple should try to use fuzzy math (sorry, logic) to convince people that there is more to their products. That's the only way for Apple to keep the profit margin.

I have had a Golf TDI for 10 years. I bought it new. It currently has 218K miles on it. It's been a fantastic car. I commute 80 miles daily and get 45-47 mpg (depending on my foot).
The reason the newer Common-Rail TDIs don't get the mileage of the VE TDI's from the early 2000's is the emissions equipment. The Common Rail engine uses a particulate filter. Every once in awhile, fuel is injected during the exhaust stroke to burn the particulates. That fuel goes against your fuel economy.
I've had diesel fuel gel twice, neither on the TDI. My old Rabbit Diesel had gel problems in NV and CO. Both times it was well below 0. Most of the time the stations know to treat the fuel. Sometimes they don't get to it in time.
The two major reasons for higher diesel prices in the winter are anti-gel additives and demand for home-heating oil. Generally the price of diesel drops in the summertime to approximately the cost of RUG.
When it comes time to buy a new car, I will definitely get another TDI. No question. I won't even consider a hybrid. More power, less complexity, better driving characteristics, etc.
I hope more car companies consider diesel for the USA. We really need to increase fuel mileage across the board or get off oil completely. Diesels would be a huge help in that regard.
edit: The big reason there hasn't been a diesel hybrid is cost. A Golf TDI-hybrid would start at $30K. Would you pay $30K for a compact hatchback? Even if it did get 60mpg?

Reading through all the expectations in this thread has me thinking that there are going to be some veeeery disappointed people on the day this is announced.
I'm guessing it'll be something like Airport Express, but for video. With a Front Row interface and a remote. Watch videos from you iTunes library, browse the iTunes store, subscribe to video podcasts, watch streaming movie trailers. Maybe a built-in web browser. If we're lucky, it will be able to browse and play video from YouTube or other video sites. That's all I'm expecting, anyway.

As far as I know the "App Store" trademark hasn't been granted to Apple yet, therefore Amazon can use it for now. On the other hand Apple just cannot sit there and do nothing about it, they must deffend the trademark they are trying to register even if it hasn't been registered yet.
I also have to admit that it surely is a very good publicity stunt by Amazon. Their new "Appstore" is now all over the web.

Either the files will be *enormous* (even with H.264), requiring many hours to download even with high speed connections, and therefore costing a lot in terms of bandwidth, or they'll be crappy resolution. Either way, I don't see how it can compete with a 5 minute trip to your local video place to rent/buy a DVD.
The only way I can see this as a win is if they have some amazing catalogue of old/foreign/indi films that you can't get at your local blockbuster.
Unlike music, which most people listen to many times, most people don't watch the same movie more than two or three times, so there's no point in investing $15, many megabit-hours of bandwidth, and the blank media to burn it after you've finally downloaded it.
99 cents and a 1 minute download is a good deal, and well within the impulse-range for most people, but $15 and several hours of downloading is not.
On the other hand, Steve Jobs is a multi-billionare, and I'm just some guy with an opinion, so maybe he knows what he's doing.
We'll see soon enough.

And even though it is a ground up rewrite, 64-bit, modern, professional application, that alone is going to have people complaining about it-- I predict-- even before they've used it and found that it is - I'd bet a large sum- quite featureful in all the ways that are important to a professional.

Anyway, here is my point on the diesel vs. hybrids: After a quick glance around the web, I see the Toyota Prius stats at $23,050 and is rated at 51/48 MPG. The 4 door Golf TDI starts at $23,885 and is rated at 42/30 for the auto. Given the differences in mileage and difference in fuel prices, it is really hard for the average buyer to justify buying a diesel. Yes, I have read all over the internet about people getting insane mileage out of the diesels, but most people are just going to look at the ratings and compare that.
They will, but VW rated its mileage conservatively, because they wanted to make sure their new diesel didn't promise more than it delivered. I think that VW may revise those numbers in the future.
A diesel is still simpler, cheaper and potentially more reliable than a hybrid, and gives better fuel economy than a gasoline-engined car. So there is a definite market there, one that is likely to grow in the near future.
They are exempt from CAFE( since HD's are supposed to be work trucks and all), but they are required to meet the new diesel emissions laws.

Well this is kinda offtopic but I was wondering..
Since AMD took over ATI I think we won't be seeing to many ATI cards in future products of Apple. Since AMD is Intel's biggest competitor I'm afraid we will only see either Nvidia or Intel integrated Graphics from now on. Even if ATI cards are better.. I hope I'm wrong but it is something to think about ..

I guess the problem with a subscription model is, for now, the cost of bandwidth to Apple. A bittorrent-like sharing system might solve that.
.. they could just use a similar setup as their Podcast listings... Apple lists em, for free so far, but the podcasters host the files.

That way, I can stream my music from iPod to Airport Express directly.
I would rather have it the other way around a cheap 512 mb iPod with a screen that can use my music on my mac via wifi. that would be sweet. I have over 100gb of music and want to have access to all of it from everywhere in my house. now a 30 gb or so iPod with wifi would be sweet. load all your favorite music for car rides and stuff and still listen to the rest at home.
